Australia's vibrant culture and excellent educational opportunities attract students from around the world. For both international students studying in Australia and Australians living abroad, bringing family members to share in the experience is a significant consideration. In this blog post, we'll explore the diverse visa options available for both groups, offering detailed insights into the process of bringing family members to Australia.

Bringing family members to Australia involves exploring different visa options tailored to your specific circumstances. Some common visa types include:

  1. Subclass 600 Visitor Visa – Sponsored Family Stream: Ideal for inviting relatives for a visit of up to 12 months. This visa allows them to travel, visit family or friends, and explore Australia. However, they cannot work during their stay. As a sponsor, you must be a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate financial capability.

  2. Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Family Sponsored: Introduced recently, this visa allows skilled workers and their families to live, work, and study in designated regional areas for five years. The applicant must be sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area, meeting specific age, skills, and English proficiency criteria.

  3. Subclass 115 / Subclass 835 Remaining Relative Visa: Designed for applicants who have no other close relatives in Australia, this permanent visa allows them to join their only close relative in Australia. The sponsor must be an eligible parent, sibling, or partner, and the applicant must meet health, character, and assurance of support requirements.

  4. Subclass 116 / Subclass 836 Carer Visa: A permanent visa for individuals intending to care for a family member with a long-term medical condition in Australia. The sponsor must be a relative of the applicant, and both parties must meet specific health and support requirements.

  5. Returning Australian Bring Overseas-Born Family: Australian citizens can apply for citizenship by descent for their overseas-born family members, enabling them to obtain Australian passports and reside in Australia.

  6. New Zealand Citizens Bring Family: New Zealand citizens and their family members can apply for the subclass 461 New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship Visa, allowing them to live and work in Australia for five years.

Bringing family members to Australia involves navigating through various visa options tailored to individual circumstances. Whether you're inviting relatives for a visit or sponsoring them for permanent residency, understanding the available pathways is essential. Consulting with immigration professionals can provide valuable guidance and support throughout the process, ensuring a smooth transition for you and your family members to life in Australia.
