Big changes are coming to Australia’s skilled migration system! The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa and the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) are designed to fill the gaps in Australia’s labour market and make migration pathways smoother for both employers and skilled professionals. Let’s dive into what this means for you.
What is the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa?
Starting from 7th December 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa. It’s a more streamlined option for skilled workers, tailored to Australia’s needs. This visa comes with a three-tier system, giving different pathways based on your skills and salary.
Tier-1: Specialist Skills Pathway
· For highly skilled migrants earning at least A$135,000 per year.
· Excludes trade workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers.
Tier-2: Core Skills Pathway
· For skilled migrants working in occupations listed in the CSOL.
· Minimum salary: A$73,150 per year.
Tier-3: Essential Skills Pathway
· For those earning below A$73,150 per year.
· Must be working in essential skill occupations.
What’s the Work Experience Requirement for the SID Visa?
Here’s some good news! Unlike the old TSS 482 Visa, which required 2 years of full-time work experience, the SID Visa only requires 12 months of full-time experience within the last 5 years.
Your skills, qualifications, and experience must match the occupation you’re applying for, making it a more practical option for many.
What is the 186 Visa Direct Entry Pathway?
If you meet the requirements, the 186 Visa Direct Entry lets you skip the SID Visa altogether and go straight to permanent residency! To qualify, you’ll need:
· 3 years of full-time experience in your field.
· A valid skills assessment.
· Proficiency in English.
This pathway offers a direct and rewarding route for skilled professionals ready to settle in Australia.
What is the CSOL List?
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) is the heart of the SID Visa. It’s a single list of 456 critical occupations across industries like healthcare, construction, technology, and agriculture. Effective from 7th December 2024, it replaces older lists such as:
· The Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
· The Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
· The Regional Occupation List (ROL).
What Occupations Have Been Removed?
Some jobs have been removed from the new CSOL. Here are a few examples:
· Café or Restaurant Manager.
· Dance or Choreographer.
· Fashion Designer.
· Graphic Designer.
· Tennis Coach.
What Occupations Have Been Added?
The CSOL also introduces several new opportunities. Some of the added occupations include:
· Retail Manager.
· Licensed Club Manager.
· Childcare Worker.
· Tour Guide.
· Shoemaker.
Australia’s migration policies are clearly moving towards a more targeted and efficient system. Whether you’re an aspiring migrant or an employer, the SID Visa and CSOL provide exciting opportunities to align talent with the country’s needs.
